Tampa Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

If you are a man and are self-conscious about the size of your breasts, you are not alone. An estimated 40-60% of men suffer what is called gynecomastia or male breast overdevelopment. Gynecomastia comes from the Greek words for “women-like” breasts and has ruined the self-esteem of men with the condition. Dr. Luria has seen many male patients with gynecomastia and takes great care to explain your options and what he thinks would be the best alternative for you. Though certain drugs and medical conditions have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in most cases.

During your male breast reduction consultation, Dr. Luria will seek to understand your needs and the results you desire. It is imperative that you be candid about your expectations and medical history as this will help Dr. Luria decide what is best for you. After talking with you, Dr. Luria will perform a full examination and check your breasts to see if he can identify the causes of your gynecomastia. Sometimes the condition can be caused by impaired liver functions, use of medicine with estrogen or anabolic steroids. Other times, it can simply be hereditary or an unknown cause. If there is a medical problem, he may refer you to a specialist.

In some cases, Dr. Luria may also recommend a mammogram which can not only rule out the very slim chance of breast cancer, but also help to give Dr. Luria an understanding of your breast composition. Once he has a better understanding of how much fat and glandular tissue is contained in the breast, he can identify which option is best. You should plan on spending 60 to 90 minutes in the office when you come for your consultation.

If your gynecomastia condition is glandular, Dr. Luria will excise (cut out) the excess tissue. Sometimes, the surgery will be done in conjunction with Liposuction to get the best results. Dr. Luria does his best to make the incisions within the edge of the areola or in the under arm area to minimize scarring. Working through the incision, Dr. Luria can then cut away the excess glandular tissue. If liposuction is also needed to remove excess fat, Dr. Luria will typically use the same incision site to remove the fat from your breasts.

If your condition is from excess fat tissue, Dr. Luria may suggest using Liposuction to remove the fat. A small incision (usually less than a half-inch) is made around the areola and a thin tube called a cannula is inserted. Your fatty tissue can then be suctioned out of your breast. You may feel a vibration or some friction during the procedure, but the pain is usually minimal.

If you have been thinking about your condition for some time but have been reluctant to talk to anyone, place a call to Dr. Luria. He is not only an excellent surgeon but also a good listener. He would love to discuss your condition in more detail. Please call 1-813-876-6376 or e-mail us to set-up your consultation today.
